1 Kings 19: 1-18.
A sign of humility is a willingness to listen. Elijah had essentially run away to hide, feeling somewhat disgruntled that he had been working zealously for the Lord, but was now feeling got at by those around him. The Lord sought him out and asked Elijah to ready himself for a renewed experience of His presence. That didn’t come in the big or spectacular things (wind, earthquake or fire), but it came in a gentle whisper.
Like Elijah, we need to be ready to listen to the Lord through prayer. How can we do that? This isn’t just about times of complete silence, although some people find that helpful. We need to listen to the Lord as we read scripture, and through our prayer-filled conversations with each other. We will only hear the whisper of the Lord in our prayers when we stop for long enough to hear Him.
