Romans 14:1 – 15:13

Romans 15:5-6 are key verses that enable us to understand this whole section. Paul calls those who are “living the gospel” to unity of life and worship. Where lifestyles or opinions differ, Paul brings it all back to unity in Christ. Where some are stronger and others are weaker, Paul brings it all again to unity in Christ. There is a sense in which Paul speaks about people each having the liberty to believe and behave as they see fit, but he always comes back to unity so that in all things we will “glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” (14:6). In that way “the God of hope” will fill us and we will “overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (15:13).
